Once a thief was caught while stealing a purse from a man. He was handed over to the police. Then he was sent to jail. The day came when he had to be tried out in a court.
On that day the man whose purse was stolen hired a lawyer and three witnesses. The witnesses were present when the purse was stolen. On the day of trial only two witnesses were present. At the time of trial the judge asked the first witness to say whether it was day or night when the theft was committed. The first witness respectfully said that it was day. Then he asked him how many persons were present at the time of theft. The witness's reply was that there were five persons present when the purse was stolen. The judge's third question was what the colour of the stolen purse was. The witness replied that it was black.
Then the second witness was called to the witness box. The judge asked him whether it was day or night when the purse was stolen. The witness replied that it was night. Then the judge wanted to know how many persons were present at the time of theft. He replied that twenty-five persons were present then. The judge's last question was what the colour of the purse was. He replied that it was white.
The trial was put off for the next day. The lawyer was not happy. He scolded the two witnesses for giving contradictory statements about the theft. He felt hopeless and did not feel the need of the third witness's appearance in the court.
Ali, the lawyer's cook was listening to all this. He suggested that he should be taken as the third witness. He told the lawyer that he would save the case. But the lawyer laughed at his suggestion. But Ali insisted that if he was given the chance he would make impossible possible.
The lawyer agreed to the suggestion. Ali was called to the witness-box on the day of the next trial. The judge asked him whether it was day or night when the theft took place. Ali replied that his Honour might call it a day or a night. The judge asked how it could be. All replied that when the theft occured there was light, but slowly It became dark. So it was the meeting time of day and night. The judge was satisfied with the reply. Then he asked the second question. It was how many persons were present at the time of theft. Ali's reply was one could say it was five or twenty-five. The judge asked All to explain clearly how it could be both five and twenty-five. All said that when the theft was committed there were only five persons, but slowly the number increased to twenty-five. The judge was satisfied and nodded his head in agreement. He then asked All to say what the colour of the purse was. Ali replied that it could be called black and it could also be called white. The judge asked how it could be possible. Ali showed a purse which was white inside and black outside. The judge smiled an unusual smile and nodded his head in full agreement.
